Avraham - Leader and Captain
Although this Shabbat Avraham emerges on the scene, it is from remarks at his funeral that we truly appreciate his greatness and our responsibility as his children. The Midrash states as quoted in Bava Batra 91a, "The day that Avraham our father departed from the world, the great men of the nations stood in the line and said, 'Woe to the world who has lost its leader, and woe to a ship that has lost its captain.' "
What is the difference between a leader and a captain?
Rabbi Nathan Lopes Cardozo explains that there are two distinctions. A leader walks in front of his followers, while a captain is the last to leave the ship. Secondly, a leader has a personal interest in the destination, while a captain does not.
Avraham embodies both qualities. As a leader, he started an unprecedented spiritual revolution in the world towards monotheism and ethics. We are the followers, beneficiaries and ambassadors of his message. However, Avraham was also the captain of the ship, a selfless personality, who cared for everyone. He welcomed idolators into his home and pleaded with God to save the people of Sedom. He led with his head and his heart.
This Shabbat, we honor the Veterans of our community who served our country with traits of leaders and captains. We pray for the leaders of the United States now and in the years ahead to fortify a more perfect union based on the values of God, ethics and the recognition of the Divine within all of our citizens. We pledge to carry out our legacy as children of Avraham, as Jews and Americans, to be a blessing to the world.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

The three topics will be: (1) who am I, and what are my responsibilities as an individual? (2) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my family? (3) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my local community, Jewish people and the world?
